DUBAI // A man stabbed his housemate to death over a debt of Dh3,000, a court heard today.
TI, 28, from Bangladesh, waited until Mohammad Habib Ahmad was sleeping before taking a knife from the kitchen in their shared villa and stabbing him three times in the belly. He then fled to Fujairah.
Prosecutors told the court the attack took place on January 17 in Hor Al Anz.
The man told police he decided to kill Mr Ahmad after hearing that he was planning to leave the country without repaying the debt.
A forensic examination found Mr Ahmad was probably asleep at the time of the attack because there were no signs of injuries caused by resistance.
Other housemates found the body in a pool of blood in the bathroom and police.
A sting operation was set up in which a friend contacted the suspect and claimed to have arranged for him to escape the country through the Hatta-Oman border.
The Criminal Court charged the man with premeditated murder.
He did not appear in court and the case was adjourned to June 2.
