A 35-year-old Pakistani driver disfigured an African man who had loaned him almost Dh15,000 and wanted his money back, Dubai Criminal Court heard on Monday.
Prosecutors said that at 6am on June 18 the Ghanaian man, whose age was not given, went with a female friend to the home of the defendant in Al Nahda.
“I wanted to ask him to return Dh14,500 which I gave him after he promised to find me a decent job with a security company. I was introduced to him by a countryman who told me that he is the one to find me a good-paying job,” he said.
“When I asked him to, he requested the money, so I paid him in installments and it all came up to Dh14,500, which after taking, he disappeared and every time I found him he would stall and give empty promises.”
When he got to the man’s home and asked for the money, he said the Pakistani produced a blade and started stabbing him with it all over his face and body.
“I tried to defend myself and stop him but I couldn’t,” said the Ghanaian, adding that his attacker threw the blade down a rubbish shoot but it got stuck.
The Ghanaian’s friend, who was waiting in the car, told prosecutors that he was taking a long time so she followed him in and found him bleeding on the floor with the defendant on top of him.
“My friend had wounds on his face, hands and arms and was bleeding heavily and the defendant was holding a sharp thing in his hand. I felt so scared and ran downstairs to find help but no one was there, so I called police,” said the woman, who was also from Ghana and whose age was not given.
She added that her friend had wanted to go at 6am because he went to the defendant’s home before during the day and never found him.
Police arrived and apprehended the defendant after seizing the blade, which they found stuck in the corner of the rubbish shoot.
The Ghanaian was taken to hospital and a medical report said that his face was disfigured beyond any reconstruction treatment.
Prosecutors said that the defendant admitted a physical assault charge during interrogations but he denied it in court.
The next hearing is on September 14.

Moscow claimed it hit the largest military fuel storage facility in Ukraine, triggering a huge fireball at the site.
A plume of black smoke rose from a fuel storage facility in the village of Kalynivka outside Kyiv on Friday after Russia said it had destroyed the military site with Kalibr cruise missiles.
"On the evening of March 24, Kalibr high-precision sea-based cruise missiles attacked a fuel base in the village of Kalynivka near Kyiv," the Russian defence ministry said in a statement.
Ukraine confirmed the strike, saying the village some 40 kilometres south-west of Kyiv was targeted.
