DUBAI // A man was robbed after withdrawing Dh200,000 from a bank, a court heard today.
SA withdrew the money from an Emirates NBD branch on Al Maktoum street on February 21 and put it in a white envelope before walking off. But shortly afterwards he was grabbed from behind by a robber who gouged his eyes and tried to snatch the envelope from him.
"I resisted, the envelope tore and the money fell on the ground and I started shouting," the man recalled.
The thief grabbed some of the fallen money and ran away.
Four people have been charged over the robbery. RM, 32, a public relations officer from Morocco, is accused of carrying out the robbery with the help of his countryman MH, 28, a watchman. Two women, RA, 30, unemployed, and LI, 26, a saleswoman, also from Morocco, were accused of helping them by putting the victim under surveillance.
The public relations officer and the two women were confronted about the case while under arrest at Al Muraqabbat police station on March 6 in connection with another crime.
Court records did not show when the watchman was arrested.
Prosecutors claim that all four confessed during interrogation.
However, in court all four denied the charges.
The next hearing was scheduled for June 6.

Sole survivors
- Cecelia Crocker was on board Northwest Airlines Flight 255 in 1987 when it crashed in Detroit, killing 154 people, including her parents and brother. The plane had hit a light pole on take off

What are NFTs?
Are non-fungible tokens a currency, asset, or a licensing instrument? Arnab Das, global market strategist EMEA at Invesco, says they are mix of all of three.
You can buy, hold and use NFTs just like US dollars and Bitcoins. “They can appreciate in value and even produce cash flows.”
However, while money is fungible, NFTs are not. “One Bitcoin, dollar, euro or dirham is largely indistinguishable from the next. Nothing ties a dollar bill to a particular owner, for example. Nor does it tie you to to any goods, services or assets you bought with that currency. In contrast, NFTs confer specific ownership,” Mr Das says.
This makes NFTs closer to a piece of intellectual property such as a work of art or licence, as you can claim royalties or profit by exchanging it at a higher value later, Mr Das says. “They could provide a sustainable income stream.”
This income will depend on future demand and use, which makes NFTs difficult to value. “However, there is a credible use case for many forms of intellectual property, notably art, songs, videos,” Mr Das says.
