SHARJAH // A GCC national who stole jewellery worth Dh400,000 from a woman has been arrested.

The man, YK, got the jewellery from a woman who rents items to women who are getting married or have a special occasion to attend.

After renting the items with the help of a female accomplice posing as his wife, he never returned them.

Lieutenant Colonel Abdel Razak Asad, the acting director of CID at Sharjah Police said the man was tracked down to a hotel in Dubai.

"The suspect rented the jewellery and he never returned it, switching off his phone," he said.

After all attempts to contact the man failed, the woman filed a case against him at Al Gharb police station.

Lt Col Asad said: "We have found out the two suspects don't have a particular accommodation and they are frequently moving from one place to another and were using various names to conceal their real identity.

"On arresting the first suspect it was found out that he was wanted by various security authorities for committing various fraud cases."

During interrogation the suspect confessed to robbing the jewellery with his accomplice and splitting the items among themselves. He also admitted that she is not his wife.

The man is currently detained and will be referred to public prosecution while the search for his female accomplice continues.

The half of the jewellery that the man had has been returned to the woman.
