DUBAI // A maid stole Dh1,700 from her employer because she had not been paid for two months, a court heard today.
ZM, 28, from Ethiopia, took the money on December 6 while her employer IH, 35, from Jordan, was out of the house and her husband was sleeping. She then ran away to a friend's house in Sharjah where she stayed for ten days before taking a job in Abu Dhabi.
"I had gone with my daughters and sister-in-law to a nearby park and after half an hour my daughter went back home to get her asthma inhaler and she discovered that the maid was not there. When I came back I found that she had taken Dh1,700 from my wallet," recalled the employer.
Two months later, police stopped the maid as she was trying to leave Abu Dhabi. They ran a search on her name and found she was wanted in Dubai.
The Dubai Criminal Court charged her with theft.
The maid said she had not received her salary for two months so took the money. However, she claimed the amount was Dh1,500, not Dh1,700.
A verdict was scheduled for June 18.
