DUBAI // A municipality engineer yesterday admitted accepting bribes from shop owners in return for approving their extension plans.
MA, a 28-year-old Emirati, confessed at the Criminal Court to taking nine such bribes since joining the municipality in 2006.
The municipality reported him to police for inspecting shops in Ras Al Khor that were not under his authority. He was kept under surveillance and caught red-handed as he accepted a Dh2,000 bribe from a shop owner who was cooperating with police.
Owners of 11 shops said that the engineer took a Dh5,000 from each of them after telling them their extensions were illegal and warning them they would be fined Dh10,000 unless they got municipality approval.
The owners said they were not aware they were paying him bribes, as they had been told the Dh5,000 was an official charge by the municipality.
The engineer accepted money from MS, a partner at a tyres company, JZ from Al Ain Star for car repairs, AA from Al Mafraq Car Spare Parts, EA, from Desert Frames company, AH from Murtada Car Spare Parts, SM from Mary Land for Heavy Equipments, MR from Ahmed Mahdi Car Spare Parts, DA from Al Bada Garage, and from ZO at the Two Stars Garage.
Sentencing is expected on November 11.
