DUBAI // A drug courier caught at Dubai International Airport with crystal methamphetamine valued at Dh480,000 (US$130,700) has been jailed for four years and fined Dh50,000. MM, 28, from Iran, was stopped and searched after the customs officer Nadir Ali viewed his itinerary, which showed him travelling to Dubai from Tehran via Bandar Abbas, Iran. The route is commonly used by crystal meth traffickers, Mr Ali said.
An X-ray at the airport showed that the smuggler had ingested 80 capsules of contraband before his November arrival. He was arrested and taken to Dubai Hospital to recover the capsules. MM confessed to prosecutors that he was asked to smuggle the drugs, without providing details. He pleaded guilty to the charges in the Dubai Criminal Court of First Instance yesterday. He had smuggled almost 800 grams of crystal meth, which is valued at Dh600 per gram, according to Dubai customs officials.

Safety 'top priority' for rival hyperloop company
The chief operating officer of Hyperloop Transportation Technologies, Andres de Leon, said his company's hyperloop technology is “ready” and safe.
He said the company prioritised safety throughout its development and, last year, Munich Re, one of the world's largest reinsurance companies, announced it was ready to insure their technology.
“Our levitation, propulsion, and vacuum technology have all been developed [...] over several decades and have been deployed and tested at full scale,” he said in a statement to The National.
“Only once the system has been certified and approved will it move people,” he said.
HyperloopTT has begun designing and engineering processes for its Abu Dhabi projects and hopes to break ground soon.
With no delivery date yet announced, Mr de Leon said timelines had to be considered carefully, as government approval, permits, and regulations could create necessary delays.

Real estate tokenisation project
Dubai launched the pilot phase of its real estate tokenisation project last month.
The initiative focuses on converting real estate assets into digital tokens recorded on blockchain technology and helps in streamlining the process of buying, selling and investing, the Dubai Land Department said.
Dubai’s real estate tokenisation market is projected to reach Dh60 billion ($16.33 billion) by 2033, representing 7 per cent of the emirate’s total property transactions, according to the DLD.

Libya's Gold
UN Panel of Experts found regime secretly sold a fifth of the country's gold reserves.
The panel’s 2017 report followed a trail to West Africa where large sums of cash and gold were hidden by Abdullah Al Senussi, Qaddafi’s former intelligence chief, in 2011.
Cases filled with cash that was said to amount to $560m in 100 dollar notes, that was kept by a group of Libyans in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso.
A second stash was said to have been held in Accra, Ghana, inside boxes at the local offices of an international human rights organisation based in France.
