DUBAI // A driver spat on a woman and tried to kidnap her when she refused his offer of a lift, a court heard today.

MK, 55, from Pakistan, grabbed the woman's hand and tried to force her into his car, but let go when she started screaming for help.

Prosecutors said the woman noticed him driving in a green car near Spinneys on Al Wasl Street at about 12pm on December 11.

"He drove slowly and asked me if I wanted a lift. I said no but he insisted and told me that he would give me a lift for free and that he would even give me money but I again refused," recalled the woman.

The driver then stopped his car and began walking towards her.

"I was shocked and scared so I did not move," said the woman. "He opened the car door, grabbed my hand and tried to force me inside. But I fought him and cried for help so he let go of my hand, spat on my face and then escaped."

The woman noted the car's licence plate and called police.

The driver was arrested the next day and admitted offering the woman a lift, but denied any wrongdoing. "She was the one who started shouting at me and she spat on my face so I spat back," he said.

The Criminal Court charged him with attempted kidnap, which he denied.

The case was adjourned to June 23 for the defendant to appoint a lawyer.
