Dh1,000 fine for teacher who assaulted ex-husband in front of police

Prosecutors said she also phoned him nearly 200 times.

DUBAI // A woman who called her ex-husband 180 times in five days to scream abuse at him and threaten to ruin his life was fined Dh1,000, a court ruled.

MH, 35, an American teacher, also turned up at the house of SA, her ex-husband, and attacked him in front of police, the Dubai Court of Misdemeanours.

She had left SA, a stateless 38-year-old estate agency manager, two years ago. She said that while they were together he used six blank cheques she had signed, then lodged complaints against her when they bounced.

"I was acquitted in two such cases so far," MH said.

SA had continued to cause problems after their divorce, she said: "He also used my e-mail password to log into my e-mail and slander me."

According to SA, the problems started after MH asked him to give her Dh30,000 and provide a home for her and their three children. If he did not, she said, she would ruin his life and his work.

He told prosecutors that between November 1-5, 2010, MH called him 180 times and subjected him to a torrent of abuse.

"She called me from her mobile and told me I was a dog and an animal," he said.

She then went to his residence in Al Barsha, where she screamed at him and assaulted him. When the police arrived, she assaulted him again and was arrested. SA agreed to drop the charges against her in return for her signing an agreement to not repeat her behaviour.

But three days later, according to SA, she called him another 60 times.

MH disputed that: "There are no records to prove his allegations," she told the court, adding that she was a respectable teacher at a reputable school and would not behave in a manner contrary to what she taught her students.
