DUBAI// More than 1,800 fake mobile phones worth around Dh1.7 million have been seized in raids by the police.
As part of an operation with the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) to catch two major counterfeit mobile phone dealers, officers raided a flat in International City that was being used as a warehouse to store more than 600 fake phones valued at around Dh1.1 million.
More than 1,200 counterfeit mobiles, worth an estimated Dh600,000, were also found along with a range of illegal goods at a wholesaler's store after an intelligence gathering operation by police and TRA officials.
The illegal mobile devices were being sold at some of the emirate's most popular commercial centres, said the TRA.
"This achievement comes as a result of the ongoing relationship the TRA has with other government departments who are all committed to ensuring a safe communications environment here in the UAE," said Ahmad Al Shamsi, manager type approval, TRA.
"Operations such as these are evidence of the strong bond between the authority and its strategic partners."
Both cases have now been taken to court and legal proceedings have started.
