SHARJAH // Fines and warnings will be issued to building contractors who fail to deliver housing projects on time without providing a valid reason.

The ruling comes after citizens complained to the Sharjah Government that their homes were not handed over as per the contract signed, said Khalifa Al Tunaiji, the director of the housing department.

“Contractors that fail to deliver homes within the time frame specified in the contract with the owners will receive warnings and sometimes fines, if they fail to provide a valid justification for the delay,” said Mr Al Tunaiji.

The department of housing investigates each complaint and delivers its findings and recommendations to the finance department for appropriate action against contractors. “Sometimes the contractors receive big fines and have their licence stopped,” said Mr Al Tunaiji. He added that sometimes owners approach contractors with requests for changes, which lead to delays.

The department stopped giving out lists of recommended contractors to the public because owners would blame it for any delays or problems with the building.

Mr Al Tunaiji said the length of the delay and other factors would determine the fine handed out.
