An abandoned baby girl is recovering in a Sharjah hospital after she was found abandoned in a building under construction..

SHARJAH // A baby girl, thought to be just a few days old, is recovering at Al Qassimi hospital after she was found abandoned in a building under construction.

Construction workers found the baby abandoned in the Al Zubair neighbourhood on Wednesday morning. Doctors said the little girl was brought into the hospital shivering and dehydrated.

She will stay in the hospital until either her parents are found or she is deemed fit to be transferred to a care centre.

"It's likely that the baby had been abandoned that night in the area and had stayed there for some hours before she was found," a police spokesman said. "The CID has began its investigations to find the mother."

Police suspect a maid in the area had given birth to the baby.

The abandonment is the latest of several such cases in the Northern Emirates, with at least one child being found every few months and police have occasionally been successful in locating the parents.
