Construction of a Dh75 million marine research centre in Umm Al Qaiwain has officially begun.
The Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan Marine Research Center was inaugurated by Dr. Rashid Ahmed bin Fahad, minister of environment and water yesterday.
According to state news agency WAM, the facility, which was launched in February this year, will focus on conserving endangered species and supporting marine habitats threatened by overfishing.
The centre will also feature a hatchery that will be able to produce millions of fish each year.
It is part of the government's strategy to ensure food security and develop the region's natural resources.
