All that is left of this scene is memories. It shows the Corniche in 1975, and was taken by Alain St Hilaire, who died earlier this year. This is the old Corniche, at the end of Airport Road. Land reclamation means that the point where these boys sit gazing out to sea is now well inland. Behind them is the monument that sat in the middle of the Clock Tower Roundabout, demolished and replaced with a small park that fronts onto First Street. Closer inspection shows the hands are set at noon – assuming the clock is working – and that, in addition to the timepiece, it featured four falcons in a slightly undignified pose. The monument also has loudspeakers facing each side. Since this is a clock, not a mosque, their purpose is unclear. Can a reader explain?
