At this time of year much of life continues as normal, under the cover of darkness. But this does not have to hinder the ability to  take exciting, sometimes mesmerising photographs.

Here, Sarah Dea's images from Al Ain at night show how a stillness and sense of presence can be achieved if the lack of light is utilised to the photographer's advantage. By having the patience to wait for a subject to enter the light, it produces a more intimate shot, instantly drawing the eye to the subject – and holding it there.
