DUBAI // The lawyer for a French motorist accused of showing his middle finger to two undercover police officers told a court yesterday the gesture was too "Anglo-Saxon" for his client.
The Dubai Court of Misdemeanours heard that the flight engineer DM, 59, had made the obscene gesture to the officers on Al Khail Road last December.
When the officers drew alongside him, they showed their ID badges and asked him to pull over - at which point he allegedly raised his middle finger at them.
DM's lawyer, Hussain Al Jaziri, said the accusation did not make sense.
"What is not logical is that French people are known for making an obscene gesture by putting their hand on their arm, not flagging the middle finger to others, which is an Anglo Saxon habit," said Mr Al Jaziri.
He said the policemen also could not have seen the gesture clearly, as both vehicles were being driven at speeds of "at least" 120kph.
Mr Al Jaziri said DM did not know the men were police and that he was focusing on the road, trying to avoid hitting them.
The two officers drove to the nearest police station and lodged a complaint.
A verdict is due to be issued on March 14.
