AJMAN // Three French children were found alone in an apartment after their mother was admitted to hospital suffering from a nervous breakdown and depression.

Ajman Police said that the French mother was admitted to the psychiatric ward of Rashid Hospital in Dubai, leaving behind the three children - aged 5, 10 and 12 - alone.

Staff from the hospital contacted police after they found out about the two boys, aged 5 and 12, and the 10-year-old girl.

Ajman Police said the mother asked a neighbour to keep an eye on the children while she was being treated.

The Frenchwoman had entered the country on a visit visa five months ago and is in violation of the residency law. She was also found to be on bail in a case brought by a hotel for non-payment of bills.

Police took the children in and then contacted Sharjah orphanage home to take care of them while their mother is treated and their case resolved.

The French consulate were notified about the woman and her children and promised to follow up on her case, police said.

Ajman Police chief Sheikh Sultan Al Nuaimi said officers are coordinating and monitoring the condition of the Frenchwoman with the hospital.
