ABU DHABI // A cancer patient and a man who brought her psychotropic pills from Switzerland have been cleared by the Criminal Court.
M O, an Emirati woman, was accused of encouraging and pushing I J, a Swiss-Moroccan to bring her psychotropic pills into the UAE, which are illegal, to be used in the country without authorised medical prescriptions.
I J was accused of bringing illegal psychotropic pills.
Their defence attorney said that there was a medical prescription authorised by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the UAE embassy in Switzerland.
“It is quite strange, because public prosecution is completely aware that M O suffers [from] cancer and needs these medicines and it was proved through official documents,” he said.
“However, they still referred the case to court and forced I J to stay in the country.”
Both defendants were released on bail.
He explained that the law only applies if there was a criminal intent.
“And we know that IJ did not know those pills were illegal in the UAE, and he did issue them based on an official accredited prescription.”
Their acquittal was announced the following day.
