SHARJAH // The body of a newborn boy was found dumped in a rubbish pit in the Sajja industrial area on Sunday morning.

A police spokesman said the baby was discovered by municipality workers collecting rubbish. As they were loading sacks into their dustbin lorry they noticed the body wrapped in cloth and called police.

Tests are being carried out at Sharjah forensic laboratory, but the spokesman said it was still unclear whether the boy had died after he was dumped or beforehand.

An investigation has been launched to find the parents.

“Like most of these cases, the baby could have been born outside of wedlock,” he said. “Babies born in illicit relationships were most likely to fall victim to such heartless treatment.”

The Sajja industrial area is mostly home to single men living in sprawling labour camps.

There are a few residential homes nearby, and officers are focusing their inquiries on these homes in the search for the mother.

Last week, a baby girl was found alive after being abandoned in a rubbish skip. She was taken to Al Qassimi hospital, where she is still being cared for by staff.

A hospital spokeswoman said the child is doing well and was expected to be moved to the Sharjah Children Care Unit.
