SHARJAH // A baby boy died shortly after being born in a public park over the weekend.

The child’s 31-year-old Indonesian mother told officers she did not seek medical help because she was staying in the country illegally and decided to give birth outside.

“She gave the baby water to stop it crying, but it died soon after,” said a police spokesman. The mother was spotted by passers by shortly after giving birth and reported to police.

“She said she regretted the death of her son as she did not know how to deal with babies and had thought by giving him water after delivery he would stop crying,” said the spokesman.

The woman added she was in pain and could not think properly or give the boy breast milk.

She told officers the child’s father was a Bangladeshi man who left the country after discovering she was pregnant.

Police took the woman to Al Qassimi hospital for treatment after which she will be investigated and charged.
