Ajman's Al Humaidiya bridge project nears completion

AJMAN // A Dh250 million project to upgrade the Al Humaidiya Bridge on Sheikh Khalifa Road is on course to be completed within weeks.

Work on the bridge and surrounding roads, recently renamed the Sheikh Khalifa Interchange, began in March last year, said Dr Abdullah Belhaif Al Nuaimi, the under-secretary of the Ministry of Public Works.

"We have almost 90 per cent of the work complete and the remaining work could be finished before the end of this year, or early next month," he said.

The project, one of the biggest ever undertaken in Ajman, was part of a Dh16 billion scheme, ordered by Sheikh Khalifa, the President of the UAE, to develop infrastructure in the Northern Emirates.

People living close to the bridge can now look forward to an end to the disruption caused by the construction and hope that the new roads will help to ease traffic flow in the emirate.

"The turns to alternative routes were dangerous and so I often saw accidents," said Faisal Mohamoud, who lives close to the bridge.

Dr Al Nuaimi said road paving in Al Nuaimiya, also part of the President's infrastructure plan for Ajman, was also almost complete. The work is being carried out by the Ajman Municipality and planning directorate.
