Aid to flow into Socotra throughout Ramadan, Red Crescent says

Two ships leaving for Yemeni island this week after food for 50,000 sent in recent days

The UAE will step up its its assistance to the people of Socotra island during Ramadan, at a time when the island is facing tropical storms and remains isolated from the mainland.

Aid has begun to pour in by land, sea and air, including essential food items and clothing for the upcoming Eid holiday, news agency Wam reported.

Emirates Red Crescent will send three aid ships loaded with 540 tonnes of basic food supplies from International Humanitarian City in Dubai to Socotra.

The first ship arrived at Socotra Port earlier this week and in the coming days, two more ships will leave for Socotra carrying supplies.

The Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan Foundation also launched a Ramadan project that aims to provide 10,000 food parcels to the residents of Socotra through a maritime and air bridge, which will benefit over 50,000 people.

The food aid, which includes flour, sugar, rice, oil, tomato paste, olive oil, tea, lentils and powdered milk, will be distributed in all the island's governorates.

The capital of Yemen's government-in-exile, Aden, was hit by strong winds at the weekend as tropical Cyclone Sagar lashed the southern coast.

Shoreline properties were evacuated and heavy rainfall caused flooding.

More unseasonal weather is expected in the coming days.
