ABU DHABI // Ahmed Al Zaabi has consistently contributed to law discussions in the FNC.

The veteran lawyer has helped amend laws and worked hand-in-hand with the council’s legal advisor, even though their opinions differed at times.

Mr Al Zaabi has played an equally active role in questioning the Government, raising issues of great interest to the public, including a demand for lower petrol prices.

Mr Al Zaabi argued that as the UAE’s oil production was greater than other GCC countries, it should be cheaper, not more expensive as it is today.

“Look at the GCC,” he said. “In Qatar a litre is Dh1, and in Saudi Arabia around that, and the same in Oman and it doesn’t produce much, less than here.”

In 2013, he questioned Humaid Al Qattami, the Minister of Education in his capacity as the head of the Federal Authority for Government Human Resources, what role and legal rights the authority has to encourage Emiratisation.

He has also voiced concerns over lack of medical support for pensioners, calling for full health insurance to be one of their rights after years of serving the country, and has caught out the Government when laws were not being enforced.
