Abu Dhabi to light up New Year with world's largest sentence made of fireworks

Abu Dhabi revellers are ready to end 2018 with a bang - with a world record-smashing firework display lighting up the skies on New Year's Eve.

Hot on the heels of the UAE scoring 95 entries in the 2019 Guinness World Records, the country is aiming to rewrite history again with the largest ever sentence created in pyrotechnics.

The spectacular 10-minute light show at the Corniche in Abu Dhabi will aim to spell out 'Happy New Year 2019'.

The display will reach a height of 40 metres, using an array of colours and configurations.

Crowds will be flocking to a host of capital venues to usher in 2019, including landmark spots such as Emirates Palace, Yas Marina and Al Maryah Island.

At the Sheikh Zayed Heritage Festival, the New Year’s Eve celebrations will include  concerts by Eida Al Menhali and Fouad Abdel Wahid, a fireworks show, three-dimensional water and light shows with dazzling lasers.

Entry to the prime viewing spots in the main concert area will be free, but limited to 1,500 visitors on a first-come first-served basis.

“We are delighted to bring such a variety of exciting events across the whole emirate of Abu Dhabi to usher in the New Year,” said Saif Saeed Ghobash, of the Department of Culture and Tourism - Abu Dhabi.

“We are confident that visitors will have an unforgettable experience that will mark the start of a happy and prosperous 2019 for all.”

Al Dhafra Festival will also be hosting a special New Year’s Eve show with concerts by Arab celebrities.

Three trading apps to try

Sharad Nair recommends three investment apps for UAE residents:

  • For beginners or people who want to start investing with limited capital, Mr Nair suggests eToro. “The low fees and low minimum balance requirements make the platform more accessible,” he says. “The user interface is straightforward to understand and operate, while its social element may help ease beginners into the idea of investing money by looking to a virtual community.”
  • If you’re an experienced investor, and have $10,000 or more to invest, consider Saxo Bank. “Saxo Bank offers a more comprehensive trading platform with advanced features and insight for more experienced users. It offers a more personalised approach to opening and operating an account on their platform,” he says.
  • Finally, StashAway could work for those who want a hands-off approach to their investing. “It removes one of the biggest challenges for novice traders: picking the securities in their portfolio,” Mr Nair says. “A goal-based approach or view towards investing can help motivate residents who may usually shy away from investment platforms.”

Stewart Howison, co-founder of Cycle Safe Dubai and owner of Revolution Cycles

“When you sweat a lot, you lose a lot of salt and other electrolytes from your body. If your electrolytes drop enough, you will be at risk of cramping. To prevent salt deficiency, simply add an electrolyte mix to your water.”

Cornelia Gloor, head of RAK Hospital’s Rehabilitation and Physiotherapy Centre

“Don’t make the mistake of thinking you can ride as fast or as far during the summer as you do in cooler weather. The heat will make you expend more energy to maintain a speed that might normally be comfortable, so pace yourself when riding during the hotter parts of the day.”
