Abu Dhabi Police has launched an initiative to raise awareness about the dangers of children playing with fireworks. The initiative is part of “Your Safety” campaign which runs throughout Ramadan and during the Eid Al Fitr holiday.
Col Hamid Al Afreet, director of firearms and explosives at the general department of Security and Ports Affairs at Abu Dhabi Police, urged parents to warn their children about the risks of playing with fireworks during Al Fitr celebrations, as well as reporting shops selling them illegally.
“Family members bear the major responsibility in advising children to avoid using and sharing fireworks,” he said. “They ought to supervise the children and deter them from playing with such dangerous items.
“Parents should also monitor how their children spend their allowances and Eid bounties, and constantly supervise their purchases.”
He added that fireworks “pose a great danger to society, as they can cause fires and other serious injuries”.
Col Al Afreet said that the initiative, organised by the security media department at the secretariat general of the Interior Minister’s office, included awareness campaigns with community police to highlight the hazards of fireworks.
