Abu Dhabi International Airport closed its south runway for construction work that will help the airport deal with an increase in traffic.

As part of its Capacity Enhancement Program, improvements will include widening the runway to accommodate for the A380 and other jumbo jets.

Having closed the runway for upgrades in January, the airport will now begin operating on the north runway which was opened in 2009.

The second runway was opened to double the airport’s aircraft handling capacity, which is in line with their plans to accommodate the expected increase in traffic once the Midfield Terminal building opens in 2017.

The south runway has been operational since 1982 when Abu Dhabi International Airport first opened and construction is expected to be completed by the end of 2014.
