The world's longest beaver dam was discovered on a remote lake in the Wood Buffalo National Park northern Alberta, Canada. At 850 metres, and constructed from thousands of trees, it is twice the length of the Hoover Dam and can be seen from space.
France is to return the mummified heads of 15 Maori warriors to New Zealand. The heads, from the collections of several museums, were taken by European explorers in the 18th and 19th century and were prized for their elaborate tattoos. Ancient Maoris mummified the heads because they believed it preserved their spirits.
A rogue communications satellite is spinning out of control around the Earth after being hit by a solar storm. Although it is still functioning, Galaxy 15 ? dubbed "zombiesat" ? has left orbit and is no longer responding to orders from its controllers. There are fears that it could damage other satellites in its path.
Officials in cash-strapped Greece began using satellite photos to track down potential tax evaders. Residents in a wealthy suburb of Athens had listed just 324 backyard swimming pools with the municipality, but the photographic evidence showed 16,974 had been built. Tax evasion is though to cost the government as much as Dh100 billion a year.
A teenage girl trying to become the youngest person to sail around the world has been told she will be denied the record because she took a wrong turn. Jessica Watson, 16, hoped to claim the previous record, set by fellow Australian Jesse Martin, when he was 18. However, her voyage will not be accepted for official status because she failed to sail far enough north.

A Chinese boy was saved from falling to certain death because his ears stuck out. Ming Ming, aged six, was left dangling eight stories from the street at his home in Yichang in Hubei Province after his head jammed in safety bars on a window he had fallen from. Fireman used hydraulic pressure expander to force the bars open and pulled the boy to safety.
A woman in South Korea has passed her driving test at the 960th attempt. Mrs Cha Sa-soon, 68, had been attempting to pass the written section of the test almost daily since 2005, spending Dh14,500 on fees. Mrs Cha said that she needed the licence for her vegetable delivery business and now hopes to buy a car to replace her handcart. However she still has to pass the driving part of the exam.
Traditional British curries are the surprise hit at a food festival in Kolkata. Curious locals were able to sample dishes such as chicken tikka masala and balti chicken, which were created by immigrants to the UK and are unknown in India. The 10-day Taste of Britain's Curry Festival is said to be running to packed houses. The Indian food industry has a turnover of Dh23.35 billion in the UK.
