A strong relationship between news media and the judicial system is vital to the development of UAE society, according to a senior justice official quoted yesterday by the state news agency, WAM. "Media are ideally driven by precision and professionalism," said Abd al Aziz Yaakoubi, the general secretary of the Judicial Council. "We believe that with a seamless relationship between both UAE media and judiciary, we will reach a world-class society."

He was speaking at a round table among senior media and judiciary officials organised by the Abu Dhabi Judicial Department. The talks touched on the right of journalists to attend court proceedings, limits on reporting individual cases and possible mechanisms to enhance communication between the media and judiciary. Among those attending was Ibrahim al Abed, the director general of the National Media Council.

Mr Yaakoubi stressed the importance of regulating media reports on pending court cases and photography inside courts of law. Mohammed Saad, the head of Al Ain Court of Appeals, said: "Media and judiciary are collaborating together very effectively." * The National
