The Ghayathi to Madinat Zayed road opened on December 8, 2010, to offer better transport links to towns in the Western Region.
The project involved building an 80-kilometre motorway connecting Ghayathi and Madinat Zayed, and a 3.5km link road connecting the New Main Road to Baynoonah Road.
Three roundabouts were built to link different junctions and provide protection for gas, oil and water lines.
Services were added such as traffic signals, reflective signs and fences on both sides of the road.
Forty-four sliding gates were added to service oil rigs and 34 gates to prevent camels from crossing the road. The gates also providing access for services teams and farm owners.
Work took 943 days to complete.
