Almost 220,000 fines have been issued for speeding motorists in the first nine months of the year in Ras Al Khaimah.
Maj-Gen Ali Al Nuaimi, commander-in-chief of RAK Police, said 219,746 fines were issued between January and September after speed cameras installed on busy roads caught drivers exceeding limits.
“The advanced radar devices, which are placed in the most important and active streets of the Emirate, are designed to achieve traffic safety and reduce accidents that can cause injuries and deaths," said Maj-Gen Al Nuaimi.
He said the cameras can record multiple offences at the same time for both light and heavy vehicles.
On Wednesday, police said a motorist in RAK accumulated more than one million dirhams in traffic fines this year, setting a record for most traffic offences committed by a single driver.
Speeding motorists can be fined between Dh300 and Dh2,000 depending on the severity of the offence, according to the amended traffic law which came into effect on July 1.
