A UAE resident who had to close his shop during the Covid-19 pandemic was among the winners of a five-figure sum in this week's Emirates Draw.

Daryoush Rahiminejad, a 53-year-old Iranian who lives in Sharjah with his family, had to shut the garment outlet as people stayed home amid coronavirus restrictions.

Now his hopes and dreams have been restored thanks to his good fortune in Sunday's draw.

"Life was hard but now, thanks to Emirates Draw, I can now open another shop and continue to provide for my family,” said the father of three, who has lived in the UAE for more than 30 years.

Fellow Sharjah resident, Masood Khazi, also took home Dh77,777 after a spur- of-the-moment decision to enter the draw.

“I decided to participate one hour before the website closed for new entries and was so excited when I found out that I had won," he said.

"I was watching the live stream on YouTube with my family and we were all very happy when my name appeared. A friend also called to say that he saw my name and we celebrated together,” the Indian resident said.

Mr Khazi said he plans to use the winnings to help his family, and give some to charity.

"I’m very motivated to keep trying my luck and, God willing, I may win the Dh100 million grand prize.”

The two were among seven lucky participants who each won Dh77,777 on Sunday.

Since the draw started last year, more than 13,000 winners have collected Dh17m. The grand prize remains at Dh100m until a single person or a group of people match all seven numbers.

Draws are held every Sunday and are live streamed on YouTube and Facebook.

Entrants can participate in the weekly draw by purchasing a Dh50 pencil that will support in planting corals. After registering online, participants can select their seven-digit number or have the system choose their number randomly.
