AL AIN // Almost 20 tonnes of restricted goods have been confiscated in raids of unauthorised markets in the downtown industrial area.

Goods taken by municipality inspectors from the street peddlars included clothes, shoes, accessories and fruit and vegetables.

Mohammed Al Mazroui, director of the Control and Inspection Department, said the area where the goods were being sold “looked like an open mall for restricted items”.

About 100 municipality controllers carried out the raid in collaboration with the Falaj Hazza police station, Emirates Red Crescent, the waste management centre and Abu Dhabi Food Control Authority.

Mr Al Mazroui said unauthorised markets were prohibited and the municipality periodically carries out inspection campaigns to eliminate them.

He called on the general public to avoid purchasing unlicensed goods and food items as they may be harmful.
