15-year sentence for stabbing man to death with broken bottle

DUBAI // A Pakistani man who stabbed a compatriot to death with a broken bottle was sentenced to 15 years in jail on Sunday.

The man left a nightclub at an Al Riffa hotel at 2am on March 25 last year and bought two bottles of Barbican from a nearby supermarket. He smashed one and plunged it into the victim’s neck.

“I was getting out of the hotel and I was drunk. I saw about seven men assaulting one man so I tried to stop them but I don’t remember what happened next,” he told Dubai Criminal Court.

A witness said he saw a group of men fighting near the hotel as he stopped at a petrol station opposite.

“I knew something bad was happening so I called police, then saw a man bleeding on the floor,” said the Egyptian, 25.

The defendant had been arguing with the victim while both were in the club.

“Several men assaulted the victim but all of them said during questioning that the defendant was not satisfied with that, so he bought the bottles then used one to stab the man in his neck,” said an Emirati police lieutenant.

The man will be deported after serving his term, although he can appeal within 15 days.
