DUBAI // Some 14.6 tonnes of chemicals used to manufacture cocaine and heroin have been seized by Dubai Customs. More than 70 plastic barrels containing acetic anhydride and calcium carbonate emulsion were found inside a container at the Jebel Ali port arriving from an unidentified Asian country en route to a third country via Dubai. The seizure is considered to be the biggest of prohibited chemicals by Dubai Customs.
The chemicals are internationally controlled and listed in the UN Agreement on Narcotic and Psychotropic Substances of 1988. Customs officers used an imaging device to determine the existence of barrels inside the container, which were labelled as containing plastic and glass spectacles. @Email:amustafa@thenational.ae
