DUBAI // Four people arrested at Dubai International Airport on Tuesday following the theft of diamonds worth US$1.4 million (Dh5.1m) from a Mumbai jewellery show have been handed over to Indian authorities, along with the gems. A team of three Mumbai police officers arrived on Wednesday night to escort the three Mexicans and one Venezuelan back to India.

"We have brought them back from Dubai and will soon present them in court," a senior Mumbai police official said yesterday. Charges against Elvia Grissel Guerrero Lugo, 24, Mauricio Gonzalez Maldonado, 24, Elias Campos Molan, 39, all from Mexico, and Orlando Gutierez, of Venezuela, are yet to be filed. Police accuse them of walking out of the India International Jewellery Show on Monday with 887 carats of diamonds.

Dubai Police arrested the four within hours of the theft after an Interpol alert. They had arrived on an Emirates Airline flight bound for Hamburg via the UAE.
