US President Donald Trump with Russian President Vladimir Putin. AFP
Mueller report: when did the bar on presidential conduct sink so low?

There's a strong chance Donald Trump will win in 2020 but given what is now incontrovertible, he certainly shouldn't

CommentApril 21, 2019

The US border crisis is one of Donald Trump's own making

The US president doesn't want a wall; he wants a never-ending battle for one instead to pose as the saviour of white America

CommentApril 13, 2019
US President Donald Trump waves to visitors to the White House, before travelling to his first rally since the Mueller report was concluded. EPA/Michael Reynolds
If the Mueller report proves anything, it's that US democracy is badly broken

Its handling so far also prompts the vital question of who guards the guardians of America's political system

CommentMarch 30, 2019
Hezbollah, whose leader Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah is pictured here, forms part of the mythological 'axis of resistance'. Hussein Malla / AP
As the Syrian war ends, the axis of resistance has been exposed for the illusion it always was

The axis gave the myth of an alliance that never really existed and a supposed consensus between two largely incompatible groupings

CommentMarch 23, 2019
People pay their respects in front of floral tributes for victims of the March 15 mosque attacks in Christchurch. AFP / David Moir
Peddlers of hate must bear responsibility for the Christchurch attacks

It is impossible to separate the language of prejudice and division from real-life acts of violence, such as those witnessed in New Zealand

CommentMarch 16, 2019
Many Syrians fled the war in cities such as Aleppo and headed to Europe. AFP
The aftershocks of Aleppo's fall continue to shake the region

From the establishment of the Turkey-Russia-Iran triumvirate to the ongoing Arab efforts to re-engage with Syria, everything can be traced back to the events of December 2016

CommentMarch 09, 2019
US President Donald Trump shakes hands with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in Hanoi. AP/ Evan Vucci
Trump's troubled bromance with Kim has only increased North Korea's global standing

Throughout this bizarre relationship, the US president has dispensed with long-established diplomatic norms. Whether that will result in a safer or a more dangerous world is anyone's guess

CommentMarch 02, 2019
US President Donald Trump will now keep 400 troops in Syria, after announcing a precipitous withdrawal in December. Reuters
Trump’s U-turn on Syria is a victory for sanity and common sense

The president's pattern of creating crises and demanding credit for stepping back from the brink is deeply troubling

CommentFebruary 25, 2019
US congresswoman Ilhan Omar. Jonathan Ernst / Reuters
Ilhan Omar's glib comments did little to advance the Palestinian cause

The congresswoman needs a more sophisticated understanding of how and why so many Americans passionately support Israel – and how to successfully advocate a pro-Palestinian agenda

CommentFebruary 16, 2019
President Donald Trump points to a supporter as he departs a rally at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum in Biloxi. AP/Alex
Trump's transformation of the Republican party is not as complete as it seems

Many of the president's supporters are willing to let him get away with anything, but it turns out that his own members of Congress are less malleable

CommentFebruary 09, 2019
Donald Trump attacked his own agencies, then claimed that their comments had been misrepresented by the media. Reuters
Trump's attack on his own intelligence services was both extraordinary and expected

The US president clearly has little appetite for the unvarnished, fact-based realities offered by his own agencies

CommentFebruary 02, 2019
Nicolas Maduro, Venezuela's president, delivering a televised press conference in Caracas on Friday. Carlos Becerra / Bloomberg
Venezuela's failings look a lot like those of some Arab nations

The one thing mercifully missing in the South American country so far is a major outbreak of terrorism, or ethnic or sectarian conflict

CommentJanuary 26, 2019
US President Donald Trump, right, speaking in the Oval House; disgraced former lawyer Michael Cohen, left. Timothy Clary and Nicholas Kamm / AFP
Donald Trump doubling down on the US government shutdown is a highly calculated move

Insisting on funding for his border wall plays to his white tribalist base – his fallback as controversy mounts over possible Russian collusion

CommentJanuary 19, 2019
US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo in Egypt last week. Andrew Caballero-Reynolds, pool photo via AP
There is a disconnect between what Donald Trump says and what foreign policy hawks think

The twists and turns in the US policy in Syria are the most dramatic example of the president's unpredictability

CommentJanuary 12, 2019
President Donald Trump confers with Vice President Mike Pence and House Minority Whip Steve Scalise after a meeting with with Congressional leaders about the government shutdown. Reuters
Republicans will face tough choices in a turbulent and decisive year for US politics

The chaos of a government shutdown, Congressional deadlock and a president under increasing pressure set the stage for major upheavals to come
