Eoin Morgan, England’s captain, is in the midst of one of the extended form slumps in which he seems to specialise.
His lows tend to be troughs, but his highs can be scintillating, and he often needs just a change of scenery to spark an improvement.
As one of the few players in the England side with any Indian Premier League experience to call on, much lies on the captain’s shoulders.
If he can return to something like his best, England could challenge for a second title. If not, they will struggle to make the semi-finals.
Coach: Trevor Bayliss
Tournament best: Winners in 2010
Match winner: Jos Buttler
A lowly position in the official standings for international T20 batsmen, just below Netherlands captain Peter Borren and Zimbabwe’s Elton Chigumbura.
Perhaps a better indicator of his talent is the fact Mumbai Indians were moved to part with the equivalent of nearly Dh2 million for his services for the next IPL. Unstoppable when it clicks.
New face: Sam Billings
Another England player bound for the IPL, after he was scooped up by Delhi Daredevils, albeit for a rather less mind-boggling sum than Buttler fetched.
Billings played for the eventual champions, Islamabad United, in the Pakistan Super League in Dubai and Sharjah, although he had left for England duty by the time the title was secured.
Key match: England v West Indies, Mumbai, March 16
Predicted finish: Group stage
Squad: Eoin Morgan (captain), Moeen Ali, Sam Billings, Jos Buttler, Liam Dawson, Alex Hales, Chris Jordan, Liam Plunkett, Adil Rashid, Joe Root, Jason Roy, Ben Stokes, Reece Topley, James Vince, David Willey
