WAKEFIELD, ENGLAND // English Rugby League club Wakefield Trinity Wildcats have announced that the Cook Islands international Adam Watene died suddenly today aged 31. The Super League club did not disclose the cause of Watene's death. The local Yorkshire Post newspaper said he died following an incident in weight training. "The circumstances surrounding Adam's death were sudden and unexpected," Wakefield said in a statement.

"Everyone at the Wildcats' thoughts are with Adam's family, and we ask for their privacy to be respected at this difficult time." The Yorkshire Post said Watene collapsed during training in the gym. The paper did not say whether the collapse was due to an accident or a physical condition. Watene came to prominence in England after he helped Castleford gain promotion to the Super League in 2005. He spent a year at Bradford, making just five first-team appearances, before joining Wakefield two years ago.
