The Wigan Warriors made sure of taking the League Leaders' shield with their 38-18 defeat of Hull Kingston Rovers at Craven Park yesterday - but they did it the hard way. Wigan were 14-0 up at half time, but within eight minutes of the restart Rovers had surged 18-14 ahead.
However, the Warriors steadied the ship and ran in four tries in the last 17 minutes, including one for Josh Charnley, the centre who was recalled for the match from his loan spell on Humberside. Michael Maguire, the Wigan coach, said: "For 20 minutes in the second half we lost our way and could not get the ball back. "We put pressure on ourselves and I thought the side showed great strength in getting back to what was needed.
"The first half was a bit special and we wanted to do the same for the second period but we had that setback." Maguire singled out Sam Tomkins for the way he had settled into the full-back role and said the player kept on coming up with new things. "The way he plays is a credit to him because he gets pushed around the positions a bit," Maguire said. Speaking about Charnley, who scored against the side he has been playing for in recent weeks, Maguire added: "He was a hungry boy at the end and it was good to see him get his try."
The Bradford Bulls finally ended their club record losing run by coming from behind to beat the Wakefield Wildcats 38-28. The last time the Bulls managed to win was against the Wildcats at Belle Vue back in May - 12 games ago. However, the Bulls overcame a sluggish start and weathered a second-half Wakefield fightback to banish their recent woes. Wakefield, who slumped to their fifth consecutive defeat, will rue what might have been after they surrendered a 12-0 lead as the loss ended any slim hopes they had of making the play-offs. But the Castleford Tigers thrust themselves back into the race for the play-offs with a crucial 40-28 win over struggling Harlequins.
David Howell gave Quins the lead but the Tigers came roaring back with scores from Ryan McGoldrick, Michael Shenton and Ryan Hudson, all three goaled by Joe Westerman, before the break. Kirk Dixon, Craig Huby, Adam Milner and Mitchell Sargent added further tries for the Tigers, who move ahead of the Celtic Crusaders and occupy the all-important eighth spot on points difference with one game left to play.
The Huddersfield Giants loose forward Stephen Wild showed his class against his future employers as the play-off contenders sealed a 54-4 win. Wild, who is to join the Salford City Reds on a three-year deal from next season, went over under the posts from Andy Raleigh's final pass on 27 minutes. Salford had conceded more than 100 points in their recent hammerings by Crusaders and Hull KR and they shipped another half-century as the Giants ran in nine tries and scored eight goals.
Meanwhile, St Helens have allayed fears that Keiron Cunningham has a broken jaw. It was thought the 33-year-old former Great Britain hooker, in his last season before retirement, had sustained an injury which would bring a premature end to his career during his side's 36-10 Engage Super League win over Crusaders at the Racecourse Ground on Saturday night. But initial scans have revealed no break, although Saints officials have not made any comment on when Cunningham will be back in action.
