BRISBANE// The South Africa coach Peter de Villiers has told his players not to assume they are certain to win this year's Tri Nations.
The world champions, who play Australia in Brisbane on Saturday, need just two points from their final two games to seal their first title since 2004. With three points for a victory, and a potential fourth for scoring four tries, that might seem like a sure thing.
But De Villiers, who has seeing his team win their first four games, including a 32-25 victory over the Wallabies last weekend, said: "We have not won the Tri Nations title yet and there are still two tough games to play," he said.
"We are focusing on the immediate task at hand and that is to do well against Australia.
"We do not chase records, but strive to improve on each and every performance. This team can still get much, much better and is playing winning rugby whilst still making errors. It excites me when I think of what these players could still do on the field."
Odwa Ndungane replaces JP Pietersen on the wing in the only change to the Boks' starting line-up after Pietersen suffered a hamstring injury in the win over Australia in Perth.
Danie Rossouw will replace the injured lock Andries Bekker on the bench after overcoming a shoulder injury.
"Whilst we have a lot of versatile players in the squad, Odwa is the natural winger and was the first choice," said De Villiers.
"He has been running the moves with us for some time and is familiar with the defensive patterns so he should fit in pretty easily".
Lock Bakkies Botha, who was replaced by Bekker last weekend, and wing Bryan Habana, who scored two tries in the match, were both selected despite having minor injury concerns.
Habana trained yesterday, but Botha sat out the session, prompting De Villiers to call up Johann Muller as cover.
Meanwhile, Australia's selectors have run out of patience with their team, who have lost all four of their Tri Nations matches, and dropped five players.
Scrumhalf Luke Burgess, hooker Stephen Moore, wing Peter Hynes, centre Ryan Cross and No 8 Richard Brown are all out of starting side for Saturday's match.
Burgess, Moore and Hynes are relegated to the bench, with Cross and Brown left out of the squad altogether.
"It's a Test match and against the world's best team. That's not a prospect any of our blokes would take lightly," said the coach Robbie Deans.
"Every time you put on your national jumper you want to do your best. That motivation doesn't change, regardless of the circumstance."

Conflict, drought, famine
Estimates of the number of deaths caused by the famine range from 400,000 to 1 million, according to a document prepared for the UK House of Lords in 2024.
It has been claimed that the policies of the Ethiopian government, which took control after deposing Emperor Haile Selassie in a military-led revolution in 1974, contributed to the scale of the famine.
Dr Miriam Bradley, senior lecturer in humanitarian studies at the University of Manchester, has argued that, by the early 1980s, “several government policies combined to cause, rather than prevent, a famine which lasted from 1983 to 1985. Mengistu’s government imposed Stalinist-model agricultural policies involving forced collectivisation and villagisation [relocation of communities into planned villages].
The West became aware of the catastrophe through a series of BBC News reports by journalist Michael Buerk in October 1984 describing a “biblical famine” and containing graphic images of thousands of people, including children, facing starvation.
Band Aid
Bob Geldof, singer with the Irish rock group The Boomtown Rats, formed Band Aid in response to the horrific images shown in the news broadcasts.
With Midge Ure of the band Ultravox, he wrote the hit charity single Do They Know it’s Christmas in December 1984, featuring a string of high-profile musicians.
Following the single’s success, the idea to stage a rock concert evolved.
Live Aid was a series of simultaneous concerts that took place at Wembley Stadium in London, John F Kennedy Stadium in Philadelphia, the US, and at various other venues across the world.
The combined event was broadcast to an estimated worldwide audience of 1.5 billion.

HIV on the rise in the region
A 2019 United Nations special analysis on Aids reveals 37 per cent of new HIV infections in the Mena region are from people injecting drugs.
New HIV infections have also risen by 29 per cent in western Europe and Asia, and by 7 per cent in Latin America, but declined elsewhere.
Egypt has shown the highest increase in recorded cases of HIV since 2010, up by 196 per cent.
Access to HIV testing, treatment and care in the region is well below the global average.
Few statistics have been published on the number of cases in the UAE, although a UNAIDS report said 1.5 per cent of the prison population has the virus.

- It has benefited more than 700 people from 44 countries, including Syria, Turkey, Iran, and Sudan
- Since the start of the Gaza war, it has also included 45 Gazan beneficiaries
- Unlike students, they are allowed to bring their families to France
