Abu Dhabi // Frederik Van Lierde, the 2013 Ironman Triathlon World Champion, has confirmed he will bid for a third victory in the Abu Dhabi International Triathlon when the 2014 season opens in the UAE on March 15.
Van Lierde’s win in the emirate earlier this year – his second after his 2011 victory – paved the way for a dominant season that saw him secure four victories before clinching the world title at the Ironman Triathlon World Championships in Hawaii, ending six-years of Australian domination.
The Belgian is likely to be closely watched by competitors when he begins his 2014 at Abu Dhabi.
“Abu Dhabi holds a special place in my heart as the event was the springboard for me to go on and become world champion,” he said. “The event, the city and the people always welcome me with open arms and the support we get is fantastic.
“Next year, I hope to claim my third victory in Abu Dhabi. The event is never easy, as the elite field is always so strong, but I know that a win in Abu Dhabi can push me to new heights, so I will be fully prepared for the event.”
The Abu Dhabi event is a key fixture in the triathlon season, attracting the world’s top triathletes and competitors from more than 50 countries.
This year’s triathlon saw a record-breaking 2,000 contestants descend on the capital.
Participants have the opportunity to compete in long, short or sprint distance routes.
Competition begins in the waters near the Corniche and moves to Yas Island and to the Yas Marina Circuit for the cycling and running portions of the event before returning to the heart of the city for the finish.
