BERNE // The UAE's successful passage into the group phase of the Asian qualification for the 2014 World Cup has moved the side up one place in this month's Fifa world rankings.
Srecko Katanec's side are now 108th in the August update release after swapping places with Iran following their two-legged victory over India at the end of last month.
In preparation for the first group game of the third round of Asian qualification against Kuwait on September 2, UAE play Qatar, who moved up two places to No 88, in Al Ain tomorrow night.
There is a new No 1 ranked team in Fifa's listings with Holland replacing the world champions Spain without playing a match last month.
Although their friendly against England was cancelled because of the London riots, Holland benefitted as previous leaders Spain were beaten by Italy to lose their place at the top.
The world and European champions Spain had held the No 1 spot for one year.
The Dutch became the seventh team to top the rankings since they were introduced in 1993 after Argentina, Brazil, France, Germany, Italy and Spain.
Brazil's 3-2 friendly defeat by Germany cost them two places as they dropped from fourth to sixth, meaning that Uruguay, who remain fifth, are now South America's highest-ranked team.
Seventy-six 'A' matches were held over the past month, 60 of which were friendlies. Fifteen games were Asian qualifiers for the World Cup, and one was a Uefa Euro 2012 preliminary round match.
The weighting of matches which involve Asian Football Confederation teams has also marginally increased from 0.85 to 0.86. This means that the UAE will benefit more in the rankings from winning matches in the future.
The calculations were also backdated to August 2010, but Fifa stressed that this would have had no effect on the seedings for Asia's qualifying groups for the next World Cup in Brazil.

How has net migration to UK changed?
The figure was broadly flat immediately before the Covid-19 pandemic, standing at 216,000 in the year to June 2018 and 224,000 in the year to June 2019.
It then dropped to an estimated 111,000 in the year to June 2020 when restrictions introduced during the pandemic limited travel and movement.
The total rose to 254,000 in the year to June 2021, followed by steep jumps to 634,000 in the year to June 2022 and 906,000 in the year to June 2023.
The latest available figure of 728,000 for the 12 months to June 2024 suggests levels are starting to decrease.

What the law says
Micro-retirement is not a recognised concept or employment status under Federal Decree Law No. 33 of 2021 on the Regulation of Labour Relations (as amended) (UAE Labour Law). As such, it reflects a voluntary work-life balance practice, rather than a recognised legal employment category, according to Dilini Loku, senior associate for law firm Gateley Middle East.
“Some companies may offer formal sabbatical policies or career break programmes; however, beyond such arrangements, there is no automatic right or statutory entitlement to extended breaks,” she explains.
“Any leave taken beyond statutory entitlements, such as annual leave, is typically regarded as unpaid leave in accordance with Article 33 of the UAE Labour Law. While employees may legally take unpaid leave, such requests are subject to the employer’s discretion and require approval.”
If an employee resigns to pursue micro-retirement, the employment contract is terminated, and the employer is under no legal obligation to rehire the employee in the future unless specific contractual agreements are in place (such as return-to-work arrangements), which are generally uncommon, Ms Loku adds.
