She was joined in the high-profile departure department by Kei Nishikori, the world No 4 who fell in five sets to Benoit Paire. Ivanovic was dismissed by 2014 Australian Open finalist Dominika Cibulkova.
"Today I know that my game was there on the court," said Cibulkova.
“I just had to stay tough and know I had to do it, she doesn’t give away shots.”
It was another blow to a women’s field that had already seen Maria Sharapova withdraw.
