LOS ANGELES // The American teenager Donald Young beat the two-time champion and No 8 seed Tommy Haas 6-2 6-4 in the first round of the Countrywide Classic in Los Angeles. Young, 19, ended a four-match losing streak as he broke the German's serve twice in each set. He will now face Frenchman Marc Gicquel in the second round after wrapping up the victory in 87 minutes. The fifth-seeded Marat Safin also advanced to the second round with a 6-3 6-4 win against American John Isner.
The former world No 1 needed a break of serve in each set to set up a meeting with Wayne Odesnik, who beat Bobby Reynolds 4-6 6-1 6-4 in an all-American first round match. The American Vince Spadea will face his sixth-seeded compatriot Mardy Fish in the second round after struggling to overcome the Frenchman Sebastien Grosjean 6-3 3-6 6-3. * PA Sport
