Smith hopes to wrap up Test series

Graeme Smith, the captain, has urged South Africa to continue where they left off in the first Test against the West Indies - which they won by 163 runs - when the second gets under way at Basseterre today. The opener said: "In a three-Test series the next match is just as crucial. We can't afford to take our foot off the gas at all. Before the first Test, we spoke about the fact that we were going to be tested, not having played Test cricket for quite a while."

Kevin Pietersen has said he will leave Hampshire at the end of the season. The England batsman, who has not played a Championship match at The Rose Bowl since being picked in the Test team in 2005, made his first appearance in two years on Sunday in the Friends Provident T20. He said yesterday: "Hampshire is a great club and I wish them well."

Cricket South Africa's recommended venues for this year's Champions League Twenty20 tournament have been accepted by the tournament organisers. The competition involving 10 leading club sides will take place from September 10-26. Event chiefs have confirmed Johannesburg, Port Elizabeth, Durban and Centurion will host the matches.

Lalit Modi, the suspended Indian Premier League chairman, issued libel proceedings against Giles Clarke, the England and Wales Cricket Board chairman, in the High Court on Wednesday. In an email to the Indian board, Clarke had alleged Modi was plotting to form a rebel Twenty20 competition in England, a claim he called "defamatory".
