The U20s were eliminated at the quarter-final stage of the World Cup in Egypt by an injury time goal at the end of extra-time against Costa Rica, bringing an end to their run that has encapsulated the hearts of the football loving public in the Emirates - even among more scathing expatriate fans. The senior side, however, could only limp home to a 1-1 draw against lowly Palestine in a friendly in Dubai, Srecko Katanec's first match in charge. It was a poor showing by any standards against a side ranked 173rd in the Fifa world rankings - 50 places below the UAE - and Katanec must surely look to tap into his younger resources if he has any hopes of moulding a successful side for the future.
