Sehwag sidelined by injury

NEW DELHI // Virender Sehwag, the top run scorer in the Indian Premier League, has been ruled out of the remainder of the tournament with a shoulder injury.

The captain of the Delhi Daredevils franchise made a stunning 119 from 56 balls against Deccan Chargers on Thursday but he will not get the chance to add to his 424 runs in 11 matches after deciding to undergo surgery. The operation means he could miss India's tour of the West Indies starting next month.

"It will be a miracle if he plays another match," P.B. Vanchi, director of GMR Sports, owners of Delhi Daredevils, was quoted as saying by the cricinfo website.

With three league games to go, Delhi are seventh in the points table and have a slim chance of making it to the knockout round.

"He has a problem. In the last match too, he struggled. The BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) is making the arrangements for the surgery," Vanchi said.

"They are waiting for a date. If he needs the surgery we are not going to be coming in the way."

Sehwag has been troubled by the injury for some time and was declared fit for the World Cup only after undergoing intensive rehabilitation in Bangalore.

Though he did not bowl during India's title-winning World Cup campaign, Sehwag finished seventh in the run charts in the tournament, including a century in the opening game against Bangladesh.

Sehwag has scored 7,694 Test runs and another 7,760 in one-dayers, averaging more than a run a ball in the shorter format.

UK's plans to cut net migration

Under the UK government’s proposals, migrants will have to spend 10 years in the UK before being able to apply for citizenship.

Skilled worker visas will require a university degree, and there will be tighter restrictions on recruitment for jobs with skills shortages.

But what are described as "high-contributing" individuals such as doctors and nurses could be fast-tracked through the system.

Language requirements will be increased for all immigration routes to ensure a higher level of English.

Rules will also be laid out for adult dependants, meaning they will have to demonstrate a basic understanding of the language.

The plans also call for stricter tests for colleges and universities offering places to foreign students and a reduction in the time graduates can remain in the UK after their studies from two years to 18 months.
