COLOMBO // Sri Lanka batsman Kumar Sangakkara leads the nominations for this year's International Cricket Council awards after picking up four nominations - including for player of the year.
But the 34-year-old faces stiff competition if he is to win the Garfield Sobers Trophy at next month's awards ceremony in Colombo.
The batsman-wicketkeeper is up against Australia captain Michael Clarke - currently skippering his side in the UAE against Pakistan - and South African duo Vernon Philander and Hashim Amla.
Amla recorded a remarkable 150 against England during the one day international this week to help secure victory for South Africa.
Sangakkara is also nominated for test cricketer of the year, along with nominations in the one-day and people's award categories.
Doug Bracewell of New Zealand, Sri Lanka's Dinesh Chandimal, Sunil Narine of the West Indies and Australia's James Pattinson have been nominated for the emerging cricketer of the year award.
An independent 32-person panel comprising former players and representatives from the media, match referees and umpires drew up the shortlists.
Cricketers receiving the highest number of votes from the panel will be adjudged the winners.
Performances over a 12-month period that ended on August 6, 2012 were taken into account.

The trek

UK's plans to cut net migration
Under the UK government’s proposals, migrants will have to spend 10 years in the UK before being able to apply for citizenship.
Skilled worker visas will require a university degree, and there will be tighter restrictions on recruitment for jobs with skills shortages.
But what are described as "high-contributing" individuals such as doctors and nurses could be fast-tracked through the system.
Language requirements will be increased for all immigration routes to ensure a higher level of English.
Rules will also be laid out for adult dependants, meaning they will have to demonstrate a basic understanding of the language.
The plans also call for stricter tests for colleges and universities offering places to foreign students and a reduction in the time graduates can remain in the UK after their studies from two years to 18 months.
