PORT ELIZABETH // An unbeaten century stand between Ajinkya Rahane and JP Duminy earned the Mumbai Indians a comfortable 16-run win over Bangalore Royal Challengers in the Indian Premier League yesterday. The pair shared a partnership of 104 to take the Indians from 53 for two to 157 for two and pave the way for a victory. Rahane struck 62 from 49 balls and Duminy 59 from 41 before the Mumbai bowlers finished the job.
Dhawal Kulkarni, Lasith Malinga, Dwayne Bravo, Chetanya Nanda and Harbhajan Singh were all among the wickets as Mumbai limited their opponents to 141 for seven. Harbhajan was the pick of the bowlers with two for 15 from his four overs. Only Mark Boucher offered any real resistance with an impressive unbeaten 48, but his side were already in real trouble by the time the South African came to the crease.
Jacques Kallis (12) and Robin Uthappa (four) fell in successive overs early on and from then on Bangalore were always fighting an uphill battle. Virat Kohli contributed a useful 20 and Boucher added the highest score of the innings from 33 balls, but the steady loss of wickets undermined any hope they had of successfully making the run chase. Things had earlier looked promising for Bangalore when Vinay Kumar removed dangerman Sachin Tendulkar for a three-ball duck after Mumbai had won the toss and elected to bat first.
Sanath Jayasuriya managed 29 before he too fell, trapped lbw by Roelof van der Merwe, but the partnership between Rahane and Duminy proved a match-winning one. The pair cut loose in the closing stages as they upped the run rate to take Mumbai past the 150-mark, a total that proved too much for the Royal Challengers. "We needed this victory," captain Tendulkar said. "Thanks to JP and Ajinkya, they batted well to the end. I thought we really played well today. Our batting was good, our fielding was good and our bowling was good."

TEACHERS' PAY - WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
Pay varies significantly depending on the school, its rating and the curriculum. Here's a rough guide as of January 2021:
- top end schools tend to pay Dh16,000-17,000 a month - plus a monthly housing allowance of up to Dh6,000. These tend to be British curriculum schools rated 'outstanding' or 'very good', followed by American schools
- average salary across curriculums and skill levels is about Dh10,000, recruiters say
- it is becoming more common for schools to provide accommodation, sometimes in an apartment block with other teachers, rather than hand teachers a cash housing allowance
- some strong performing schools have cut back on salaries since the pandemic began, sometimes offering Dh16,000 including the housing allowance, which reflects the slump in rental costs, and sheer demand for jobs
- maths and science teachers are most in demand and some schools will pay up to Dh3,000 more than other teachers in recognition of their technical skills
- at the other end of the market, teachers in some Indian schools, where fees are lower and competition among applicants is intense, can be paid as low as Dh3,000 per month

Iftar programme at the Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding
Established in 1998, the Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding was created with a vision to teach residents about the traditions and customs of the UAE. Its motto is ‘open doors, open minds’. All year-round, visitors can sign up for a traditional Emirati breakfast, lunch or dinner meal, as well as a range of walking tours, including ones to sites such as the Jumeirah Mosque or Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood.
Every year during Ramadan, an iftar programme is rolled out. This allows guests to break their fast with the centre’s presenters, visit a nearby mosque and observe their guides while they pray. These events last for about two hours and are open to the public, or can be booked for a private event.
Until the end of Ramadan, the iftar events take place from 7pm until 9pm, from Saturday to Thursday. Advanced booking is required.

HOW DO SIM CARD SCAMS WORK?
Sim swap frauds are a form of identity theft.
They involve criminals conning mobile phone operators into issuing them with replacement Sim cards, often by claiming their phone has been lost or stolen
They use the victim's personal details - obtained through criminal methods - to convince such companies of their identity.
The criminal can then access any online service that requires security codes to be sent to a user's mobile phone, such as banking services.

What is the definition of an SME?
SMEs in the UAE are defined by the number of employees, annual turnover and sector. For example, a “small company” in the services industry has six to 50 employees with a turnover of more than Dh2 million up to Dh20m, while in the manufacturing industry the requirements are 10 to 100 employees with a turnover of more than Dh3m up to Dh50m, according to Dubai SME, an agency of the Department of Economic Development.
A “medium-sized company” can either have staff of 51 to 200 employees or 101 to 250 employees, and a turnover less than or equal to Dh200m or Dh250m, again depending on whether the business is in the trading, manufacturing or services sectors.

What is graphene?
Graphene is a single layer of carbon atoms arranged like honeycomb.
It was discovered in 2004, when Russian-born Manchester scientists Andrei Geim and Kostya Novoselov were "playing about" with sticky tape and graphite - the material used as "lead" in pencils.
Placing the tape on the graphite and peeling it, they managed to rip off thin flakes of carbon. In the beginning they got flakes consisting of many layers of graphene. But as they repeated the process many times, the flakes got thinner.
By separating the graphite fragments repeatedly, they managed to create flakes that were just one atom thick. Their experiment had led to graphene being isolated for the very first time.
At the time, many believed it was impossible for such thin crystalline materials to be stable. But examined under a microscope, the material remained stable, and when tested was found to have incredible properties.
It is many times times stronger than steel, yet incredibly lightweight and flexible. It is electrically and thermally conductive but also transparent. The world's first 2D material, it is one million times thinner than the diameter of a single human hair.
But the 'sticky tape' method would not work on an industrial scale. Since then, scientists have been working on manufacturing graphene, to make use of its incredible properties.
In 2010, Geim and Novoselov were awarded the Nobel Prize for Physics. Their discovery meant physicists could study a new class of two-dimensional materials with unique properties.
