They have a new captain, a new kit, a new coaching staff and a brand new home ground. Now, the Pune Warriors India are hoping they can make a fresh new start to theIndian Premier League after finishing second from the bottom on their debut season.
"We want to forget about last year," said Praveen Amre, the Pune batting coach after their second win of the new campaign last night. "This is a new start for us and we want to keep the momentum going."
Playing their first game on their brand new home ground, a packed Sahara Stadium, Pune put 166 for six on the board, with the 81 run partnership for the third wicket between Marlon Samuels and Robin Uthappa, in 10.1 overs, setting the stage for a 12-ball cameo of 25 from the Australian Steven Smith.
Punjab made a disappointing start to the chase, losing both the openers - Paul Valthaty (one) and Adam Gilchrist (six) - with only nine runs on the board.
At the end of five overs, they had scored only 13; they started their final 10 overs needing 114 and finished 22 runs short.
Amre praised the contribution of Samuels and Smith, Pune's two new recruits for this season, and the leadership of Sourav Ganguly, who is leading the side after Yuvraj Singh was ruled out because of his cancer treatment.
"This game was really crucial for us," Amre said. "After winning in Mumbai, we wanted to keep the momentum going. As a batting unit, we did really well on this wicket.
"The partnership between Samuels and Robin was really crucial, and the way Smith and Manish [Pandey, 12 off four balls] finished, it helped us get a good total on the board. Now we want to continue from here."
About the presence of Ganguly, Amre said: "Sourav is playing a great role. His ability to lead is excellent.
"That's what we wanted this year and I believe he is delivering that."
Samuels and Uthappa came together after Ganguly and Jesse Ryder were dismissed between four runs of each other.
They kept the home fans entertained, taking the score to 113 before the West Indian was bowled by Harmeet Singh four runs short of his half-century.
Singh also dismissed Uthappa in an eventful 19th over that saw 26 runs being scored. The bowler had to be taken off after bowling two consecutive full tosses over the waist height and Bipul Sharma had to bowl the final four deliveries of the over.
Smith smashed the first two of those for consecutive sixes and Pandey smacked another maximum off the last ball.
Ganguly said of the victory: "We bowled well and also batted well towards the end. The late onslaught took us to 160 plus but it was certainly a 150 pitch."
Meanwhile,
Brad Hodge smashed 44 off 29 balls and the fast bowler Amit Singh grabbed two wickets in as many balls to lead the Rajasthan Royals to a comfortable 22-run victory over the Kolkata Knight Riders to ensure they remain the early leaders in the Indian Premier League.
Hodge was the biggest contributor to Rajasthan’s total of 164 for five, and he put on 64 with Ashok Meneria (40) for the fourth wicket after the innings had looked to be in trouble at 61 for three with eight overs gone.
Hodge said: “It was a good wicket. Seven runs per over was never going to be enough and we got a good partnership.”
Manoj Tiwary fought a lone battle and scored 59 off 49 balls as Kolkata were restricted to 142 in their 20 overs.
Kolkata were forced to play a catch-up game after Singh removed Jacques Kallis and their captain Gautum Gambhir off successive deliveries and Ankeet Chavan made it eight for three by having Brendon McCullum plumb leg before wicket.
Gambhir said their poor start had ruined their hopes of chasing down Rajasthan’s total.
“It’s difficult to chase when you are three down early into your innings,” he said.
It was Rajasthan’s second successive win, having beaten Kings XI Punjab in the first match and Rahul Dravid, the captain, hopes his side can take that form on the road, beginning with Wednesday’s trip to the Mumbai Indians.
“It was a good start,” he said. “We started as underdogs which is good for us. Good to win at home and hopefully we can get some wins away as well.”

Ten tax points to be aware of in 2026
1. Domestic VAT refund amendments: request your refund within five years
If a business does not apply for the refund on time, they lose their credit.
2. E-invoicing in the UAE
Businesses should continue preparing for the implementation of e-invoicing in the UAE, with 2026 a preparation and transition period ahead of phased mandatory adoption.
3. More tax audits
Tax authorities are increasingly using data already available across multiple filings to identify audit risks.
4. More beneficial VAT and excise tax penalty regime
Tax disputes are expected to become more frequent and more structured, with clearer administrative objection and appeal processes. The UAE has adopted a new penalty regime for VAT and excise disputes, which now mirrors the penalty regime for corporate tax.
5. Greater emphasis on statutory audit
There is a greater need for the accuracy of financial statements. The International Financial Reporting Standards standards need to be strictly adhered to and, as a result, the quality of the audits will need to increase.
6. Further transfer pricing enforcement
Transfer pricing enforcement, which refers to the practice of establishing prices for internal transactions between related entities, is expected to broaden in scope. The UAE will shortly open the possibility to negotiate advance pricing agreements, or essentially rulings for transfer pricing purposes.
7. Limited time periods for audits
Recent amendments also introduce a default five-year limitation period for tax audits and assessments, subject to specific statutory exceptions. While the standard audit and assessment period is five years, this may be extended to up to 15 years in cases involving fraud or tax evasion.
8. Pillar 2 implementation
Many multinational groups will begin to feel the practical effect of the Domestic Minimum Top-Up Tax (DMTT), the UAE's implementation of the OECD’s global minimum tax under Pillar 2. While the rules apply for financial years starting on or after January 1, 2025, it is 2026 that marks the transition to an operational phase.
9. Reduced compliance obligations for imported goods and services
Businesses that apply the reverse-charge mechanism for VAT purposes in the UAE may benefit from reduced compliance obligations.
10. Substance and CbC reporting focus
Tax authorities are expected to continue strengthening the enforcement of economic substance and Country-by-Country (CbC) reporting frameworks. In the UAE, these regimes are increasingly being used as risk-assessment tools, providing tax authorities with a comprehensive view of multinational groups’ global footprints and enabling them to assess whether profits are aligned with real economic activity.

Short-term let permits explained
Homeowners and tenants are allowed to list their properties for rental by registering through the Dubai Tourism website to obtain a permit.
Tenants also require a letter of no objection from their landlord before being allowed to list the property.
There is a cost of Dh1,590 before starting the process, with an additional licence fee of Dh300 per bedroom being rented in your home for the duration of the rental, which ranges from three months to a year.
Anyone hoping to list a property for rental must also provide a copy of their title deeds and Ejari, as well as their Emirates ID.
Tailors and retailers miss out on back-to-school rush
Tailors and retailers across the city said it was an ominous start to what is usually a busy season for sales.
With many parents opting to continue home learning for their children, the usual rush to buy school uniforms was muted this year.
“So far we have taken about 70 to 80 orders for items like shirts and trousers,” said Vikram Attrai, manager at Stallion Bespoke Tailors in Dubai.
“Last year in the same period we had about 200 orders and lots of demand.
“We custom fit uniform pieces and use materials such as cotton, wool and cashmere.
“Depending on size, a white shirt with logo is priced at about Dh100 to Dh150 and shorts, trousers, skirts and dresses cost between Dh150 to Dh250 a piece.”
A spokesman for Threads, a uniform shop based in Times Square Centre Dubai, said customer footfall had slowed down dramatically over the past few months.
“Now parents have the option to keep children doing online learning they don’t need uniforms so it has quietened down.”
